Our Sink Hole

Strange things happen when it starts to rain, like the ground starts caving in.  The day after our big rain, we found this huge hole in our yard.  Sink Holes are one of those things that I don't like to think about much, because when I do, I get a little panicky.  So instead of dwelling on the fact that our whole house could collapse into a mysterious hole, I decided not to think about it.  Our kids began to play there and burry things in it.  A day or two later, our neighbor saw it, and kind of freaked out, telling us we should not let our kids play near it, until we talked to our landlord, and he did something about it.  After all, she thought that it was probably an old pit toilet that had not been filled in properly, and it could collapse at any moment.  At that point, we told the kids not to play anywhere near it, and had all our visitors go all the way around to the other gate at the neighbors' house so no one would 'fall in'.  Then one day, our friend and the guy we hire for jobs around the house came by and asked why we had our door locked in the front.  We showed him the hole, and told him what we thought.  He laughed and shared that he had been the one, along with the previous tenant who had in fact filled up the hole from the previous pit toilet.  He said they had been 100% sure that it was fully filled in, but now he was only about 97% sure.  So, with that vote of confidence, we filled the hole up with dirt, replaced the bricks, opened the front gate again, and went along with life as it was before.  And we prayed that the hole wouldn't cave in.
