Poutine
Besides maple syrup, there are few things that represent Canada to us better than "poutine". When we first arrived, we began to ask what traditional foods Canada, and specifically Quebec had to offer. The most mentioned food, besides a few holiday favorites, was poutine. When our kids first heard this word it made them chuckle. There is not translation into English, it's just poutine. So what is this favorite Quebecois dish? It's a basket of french fries, sprinkled with cheese curds, maybe with chicken, and doused with brown gravy. Sound good to you? If not, think of it more as a casserole than a fry topping. I have to say that it's not really a family favorite for us either, but it sounds a lot better now than when we first arrived. As we say goodbye to our friends this week who have been with us studying French, we are going to celebrate our 'graduation' with a little Canadian flair, a dish of poutine, and a movie in French. It's funny how things can start to grow on you.
And so begins the food adventures...here's to being brave!!!(hopefully this is the strangest thing you will eat in the next 10 yrs!)
ReplyDeleteDaniel LOVES poutine! His family lived in the same area in missionary training years ago to learn french. When I had Keziah his mom came to visit and asked Daniel and my brother in law who was also visiting what they wanted her to cook. They replied in unison POUTINE! I couldn't believe my ears! I personally think it is GROSS, so we made something different for me, but Daniel and his brothers all love the stuff. They will eat huge plates of it! We love you guys and miss you!
