Moving to the Suburbs
The city we live in is not very big. In fact if you wanted to walk from one end to another, you could probably do it in under an hour. For the past year, we have been living in a small "duplex" on the north side of town. It has been a great launching place for us, but we feel a bit like sardines. So about a month ago, we began looking for a new place to live. When a friend who has lived here many years offered to help us find one, we gave her a list of essentials and then things we would like to have. The essentials were: 1. a large yard 2. an indoor bathroom 3. at least as many bedrooms as we have now (3) and 4. a non-cement roof.
We looked at a few houses in town, but despite the fact that they met all the essential criteria, they were nothing to write home about, and surely not worth the effort of moving our stuff into a new house. There was one house that another western family had recently moved out of that was available, but the problem was that it was on the opposite edge of town. Now, although I said we currently live on the north edge of town, we are less than a mile from the large central market, so we are kind of considered close to downtown. This new house would be more like living in the suburbs.
We decided to take it. It's kind of like moving to a new neighborhood where half of the lots are still empty. Its quiet compared to our busy street, its wide open and spacious. It has a huge yard, for running, for animals, for planting things, for parking multiple vehicles and for more. We won't exactly be just around the corner from anyone we know, but there are plenty of new people to get to know. We are looking forward to meeting new people and practicing Arabic with them.
Although we haven't moved in yet, here are a few photos of the house empty. Maybe we will give some before and after photos later. Stay tuned.
