Polar Opposites
Today was our coldest day yet in frigid Canada! Tonight the weather prediction is -27* F with a wind chill of -38* F. Ouch! We decided to have the kids stay inside to avoid frostbite of the end of their noses. Just for fun we looked to see what the temperature was in Chad today. The high was 106*F. It's really hard to imagine a 100(+)* difference in temperature! These places really are polar opposites. Next year about this time I'm sure well be missing the frigid temperatures...well maybe.
Interestingly enough, this week we have been learning how to talk about the weather. Some phrases are the same like "sitting around, talking about the weather", and some are very different.
Here is a short list of odd phrases you might hear in french about the weather.
Il pleut des cordes - It's raining cats and dogs (literally: it's raining ropes)
Il fait un temps à ne pas mettre un chien dehors - The weather's too bad to go outside (literally: The weather is such that I wouldn't even put a dog outside.)
Il fait un froid de canard - It's cold enough to freeze a penguin (literally: It's cold like a duck.)
Il pleut des grenouilles - It's raining enough to drown a fish (literally: It's raining frogs.)
