Thankful I'm not a Pilgrim
This week we are taking a break from our regular school routine, and are re-reading the Thanksgiving story. Upon reading the short version for those in the Kindergarten and under crowd, the kids decided that we are very similar to the original pilgrims who celebrated Thanksgiving. We too left the land we loved and moved our family and all our belongings to a new land. We have learned new and different ways of doing things, learned a new language, and faced many difficulties that we would otherwise not known.
We then started listening to an audio book called "Stories of the Pilgrims". Its a historical fiction novel about the pilgrims that first came to America. After listening to only a little of that book, our kids quickly decided that though at first glance there appear to be some similarities between us and them, there are by far more differences. We did not flee our country trying to escape religious persecution. We did not have to sail across the ocean, never to return. We did not loose half or more of our travelers to death and disease. We brought a container of items with us to make life more comfortable. We can buy an incredible amount of food, ready to eat, that we didn't have to grow, and some processed that will keep us alive, even in an emergency. We did not have to face freezing temperatures upon our arrival...and the list goes on and on.
Our conclusion, if we have anything to be thankful for, (and believe me we have a long list) we can at least be thankful that we are not one of those original pilgrims that travelled to America, wondering what kind of life God had in store for them.
